Crocheting For a Cause

For this experience I wanted to find a way for me to give back to my community through hobbies and activities I already enjoy. After joining a club on campus, UC Knits, I learned about their donation process through the club and it immediately sparked my interest. I already have plenty of scarves I have crocheted in the past and don't need anymore but it is one of the most relaxing, thoughtless things for me to crochet so I thought it would be the perfect opportunity for me.

For this experience I crocheted throughout the week, usually for hours in a row on the weekends. I finished 6 scarves to donate and during the Thursday meeting for UC Knits I would teach friends how to crochet enabling them to also create scarves to donate.

During this experience I also spent time researching to find out more about homelessness, specifically in the Cincinnati area. There is about 7,000 who don't have a place to go and end up having to sleep on the streets. More than a quarter of these people are just children.

Throughout this journey I also learned more about myself. I learned just how important it is for me to give back to my community and I learned how to do this in ways that are using my skills. I learned how doing something that might seem small, like crocheting a scarf, can be so much more beneficial than one might originally assume. If more people did small deeds to help out their communities, then communities around the world would be stronger. Knowing the impact something that I did that seemed so small to me, left me feeling like there is just so much more that I can do. I will continue crocheting scarves and I will continue finding new ways to become a better community member.

Here is a photo of me crocheting at home during a school break! I made a total of six scarves to donate.

This is a look into my hour log that I was keeping through the experience on the notes app on my phone.
